KARUTHALINTE CHUVADUKAL -An awareness speech on diabetic foot among elderly. Organised by Students of Believers Church medical College, Thiruvalla.

The phrase KARUTHALINTE CHUVADUKAL comes from Malayalam :

  • Karuthal (കരുതൽ) – care, concern, compassion, protection.
  • Chuvadukal (ചുവടുകൾ) – steps, footsteps, path taken.

So together KARUTHALINTE CHUVADUKAL means : “the footsteps of care” or “the path of compassion”. It beautiful conveys the idea that when we walk with care and compassion, we leave behind meaningful footsteps that guide and inspire others.

INTRODUCTION

Diabetic foot is one of the most serious complications of diabetes,caused by a combination of nerve damage (Neuropathy), blood circulation and a higher risk of infections, even a small wound or blister in a person with diabetes can quickly progress to severe ulcers or gangrene if not recognised and treated early. Awareness is essential because many people underestimate minor foot problems, lead to delayed care and preventable imputations. By educating patient on daily foot care, early warning signs and the importance of regular medical check ups, we can Reduce complications, improve quality of life and save lives.

OBJECTIVES

  • To educate participants on how diabetes can affect foot health, leading to poor circulation and no damage.
  • To create awareness about the science and symptoms of diabetic foot complications.
  • To emphasise the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment.
  • To improve preventive practices and knowledge of proper foot care among individuals at risk.

EXECUTION

  • The awareness program was successfully conducted as an interactive classroom session.
  • The session focused on presenting key points related to diabetic factors, clinical signs and prevention.
  • Presenters used visual aids (e.g. chalkboard diagrams) and real life, example examples to explain concepts.
  • An open form for questions was included to address audience doubts.
  • Handout or takeaway messages may have been provided for reinforcement (if applicable).

Skills Learned

  • The team showed effective communication, planning, and confidence in public speaking. Roles were divided and executed with professionalism and teamwork.
  • Gained in-depth understanding of diabetic foot care and public health education.

The impact included enhance awareness among participants, empowering through preventive knowledge in a reduction in the risk of long-term diabetic complications, importantly, it marked the beginning of a proactive student lead health initiative under NEST.
