The leadership workshop conducted in March 2025 was a turning point for student leaders at BCMC. Through immersive sessions and guided reflections, participants honed their leadership instincts; focusing on communication, decision-making, and ethical problem-solving.
The strength of the workshop lay in its deeply collaborative spirit. Faculty mentors and experienced student coordinators came together to offer guidance, support, and shared wisdom, creating a safe space for growth and exploration.
As BCMCH students take forward their learning, they are not just planning projects, they are preparing to lead with empathy, purpose, and vision. Their contribution continues to strengthen NESTβs presence in southern India and inspires a new wave of medical leadership grounded in care and community.

Dr. Philip Mathew Professor & Head of Critical Care, BCMCH Thiruvalla
Dr. Philip Mathew Professor & Head of Critical Care, BCMCH Thiruvalla Dr. Philip Mathew is a seasoned critical care expert with over 14 years of experience in anaesthesia, intensive care, and perioperative medicine, working across Indian and international teaching hospitals οΏΌ. He earned his postgraduate training at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgaum, and Lisie Hospital, Kochi, before undergoing an International Fellowship with the Royal College of Anaesthetists at Leeds Teaching Hospital, UK οΏΌ. Most recently, he completed a Fellowship in General Infectious Diseases at CMC Vellore οΏΌ. At BCMCHβs state-of-the-art ICUβthe largest standalone unit in Central TravancoreβDr. Mathew leads multidisciplinary teams managing sepsis, complex postoperative cases, and advanced life-support technologies, including ECMO οΏΌ. Beyond his clinical role, he serves as Deputy Director for Innovation & Partnerships, driving research and digital integration in critical care οΏΌ. His dedication to compassionate care and innovation continues to elevate critical care standards in Kerala and beyond.

Dr. Abel K. Samuel Johnson Assistant Director & Vice Principal, BCMC, Thiruvalla
Dr. Abel K. Samuel Johnson, MBBS, MD, stands at the intersection of public health, medical education, and leadership. Currently serving as Assistant Director, Vice Principal, and Professor of Community Medicine at Believers Church Medical College, Thiruvalla, he also contributes nationally as a Board Member of the National Resource Center for Non-Communicable Diseases, India. With a philosophy rooted in servant leadership and team empowerment, Dr. Johnson has steadily ascended into academic leadership. His commitment to decentralized management and health systems thinking reflects in the many programs he has overseen. He is also the author of the best-selling clinical guide βThe Intern β Believers Medical Manual,β now a staple for young doctors across institutions. Dr. Johnsonβs international accolades include competitive research travel grants to the USA, Australia, and Canada, where his work on tuberculosis, post-disaster disease management, and rural health postings was recognized. He was recently selected for the elite International Dean Leadership Development Program by the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada β an honor awarded to only 20 global academic leaders. His work bridges classroom and community, theory and field, with a singular mission: to advance health equity through education and leadership. As a judge for βProjects That Make a Difference,β Dr. Johnson brings a wealth of strategic vision, mentoring insight, and a deep belief in student potential.
