Aashray- Aging with grace

Students of Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), conducted a community outreach project titled AASHRAY – “Aging with Grace”, which was successfully conducted at an Old Age Home with the objective of promoting health, wellness, and dignified aging among elderly residents. The initiative was designed as a holistic geriatric health intervention, addressing both preventive and promotive aspects of healthcare.

The project focused on early detection of common non-communicable diseases, health education, nutritional supplementation, and promotion of physical activity in a safe and supportive environment. A total of 11 elderly residents participated in the program. All participants were female, with an age range of 60 to 75 years.

The primary objectives included monitoring and recording blood pressure and blood glucose levels of all residents, providing individualized health counseling based on findings, distributing calcium supplements to support bone health, conducting senior-friendly exercise sessions to improve mobility and balance, and educating residents on simple, sustainable health practices suitable for daily life.

Methodology

The project was carried out in coordination with the Old Age Home management. Prior to the visit, resources were mobilized, and essential medical equipment—including validated digital blood pressure monitors, glucometers, and test strips—were procured. Calcium tablets were arranged to ensure appropriate supplementation.

Health check-ups were conducted following standard protocols. Blood pressure readings were taken after adequate rest and documented in individual health records. Random blood glucose testing was performed using sterile finger-prick techniques. These assessments were followed by one-on-one counseling sessions, allowing personalized interaction with each participant.

Residents with elevated blood pressure received advice regarding dietary modifications, stress management, and the importance of regular monitoring and follow-up. Those with raised blood glucose levels were counseled on reducing sugar intake, adopting balanced diets, and increasing safe physical activity. Participants with normal readings were encouraged to continue healthy lifestyle practices.

As part of nutritional support, each resident received a one-week supply of calcium tablets, along with education on the role of calcium in preventing osteoporosis and fractures. Dietary sources of calcium were also discussed to reinforce long-term benefits.

Exercise and Wellness Sessions

Senior-friendly exercise sessions formed an integral part of the project. These included stretching and flexibility exercises, seated balance activities, gentle aerobics, and breathing exercises. All activities were tailored to individual abilities, and modifications were made for residents with mobility limitations. The sessions aimed to enhance mobility, reduce fall risk, and promote mental well-being.

Outcomes and Key Findings

The initiative led to the identification of hypertension in three residents, some of whom were previously undiagnosed, enabling timely referral for further medical evaluation. Four residents exhibited elevated blood glucose levels, indicating diabetes or pre-diabetes, highlighting the importance of routine screening in elderly populations. Participants reported feeling reassured, informed, and motivated to adopt healthier practices.

Challenges Faced

Initial anxiety regarding blood glucose testing was observed among some residents; however, this was effectively addressed through reassurance and clear communication. Physical limitations necessitated exercise adaptations, and weather conditions required shorter, more frequent activity breaks. These challenges provided valuable learning experiences in delivering geriatric-friendly healthcare.

The AASHRAY project successfully emphasized the importance of preventive healthcare, compassionate engagement, and holistic well-being in the elderly. It reinforced the value of community-based interventions and sensitized medical students to geriatric health needs.
