It is widely understood that maintaining a healthy body is crucial for well-being.However, how many of us consistently prioritize self-care? It seems we often only appreciate the importance of health when illness arises. As healthcare workers, we witness this daily.

This idea prompted us to undertake this project. Food is a frequent source of infection, so we sought to assess food quality in the hostels and student satisfaction with the services.

OVERVIEW

Under this project we highlighted the need to check the hygiene levels of our college canteen and mess. Being medical students we all know the importance of hygiene and most of us follow that too.

*But do we care about the process before that?

*Have we ever checked what are the hygiene standards of these places ?

OBJECTIVES:-

Ensuring the health and Safety of students by checking that food is prepared and served in a clean environment to prevent foodborne illnesses and contamination.

  1. Checking sanitation standards.
  2. Monitoring the quality of food served.
  3. Preventing pests and diseases.
  4. Ensuring proper waste disposal.
  5. Enhancing the eating experience.
  6. Building trust in the quality and safety of the food provided.

HOW (Execution Plan)

  1. To make this project successful, we visited hostels messes and canteen (both boys and girls) in our college and checked the kitchen hygiene and the staff.
  2. We assessed the cleanliness of environment and food handling practices.
  3. We collected student data on their experience and opinions regarding hygiene and safety levels.
  4. Used a questionnaire for the staff to compare their responses with our observations.
  5. Besides addressing kitchen staff, we advised the students about how they can protect themselves from any food related health issues. And how to tackle any problem they encounter.

CHALLENGES

  1. Our main concern was how to communicate effectively with the kitchen staff so that they don’t feel attacked. To avoid resistance to criticism.
  2. difficulty in access to sensitive areas.
  3. time and staff related constraints.

RESULT

1. STUDNETS REVIEWS

To better understand the situation, we created a Google Form and distributed it to both the boys’ and girls’ hostels to receive anonymous responses from them. We received approximately 105 responses. After reviewing the results, we discovered a significant level of student dissatisfaction with the quality of the food.

2. VISITING MESS AREA

To assess the cleanliness of the student dining area, we visited the hostel mess. We tried to assess the hostel staff service. Also we tried to cross check with the students responses. Some places were actually pretty clean but a few places needed some improvement.

3. MEETING KITCHEN STAFF

Following our discussions with students, we felt it was important to gather input from other perspectives. We therefore met with several staff members and respectfully inquired about personal hygiene, kitchen hygiene, and pest control. We have prepared a video with the staff’s consent, which we’ve included below for your viewing.

4. DISCUSSION WITH STUDNETS

We engaged in small group discussions with students, focusing on how proper hygiene can help prevent infections and foodborne illnesses.

Conclusion of Healthy living starts in the kitchen –

Healthy living isn’t just about exercise or genetics — it starts with the daily choices we make in our kitchens. The food we prepare and consume plays a crucial role in shaping our physical health, mental well-being, and overall lifestyle. By choosing fresh, whole ingredients over processed and packaged foods, we fuel our bodies with the nutrients they need to function at their best. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can prevent chronic diseases, boost immunity, and increase energy levels.

The kitchen is more than a place to cook — it is a space where health begins. Developing healthy cooking habits, such as grilling instead of frying, controlling portion sizes, and reducing sugar and salt intake, can lead to long-term benefits. It also promotes mindful eating and a stronger connection with what we consume. Moreover, preparing meals at home encourages quality family time and builds a more conscious approach to food.

In essence, the kitchen is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. When we prioritize nutritious cooking and eating habits, we take an active step toward a longer, healthier, and more fulfilling life — all starting right at home.
