๐ฟ Spreading Hope: A Nashamukt Future Through Awareness & Street Theatre
In an effort to build aย thriving rural society, students from Manipal Tata Medical College, Jamshedpur took a proactive step in organizing an impactful awareness session and Nukkad Natak in the village of Kesikudar. This event was designed to educate the rural population about the devastating effects of addiction and the importance of collective community resilience.
Why a Nashamukt Village Matters
Addiction continues to plague rural communities, disrupting family structures and weakening the social fabric. The ย initiative focuses on grassroots education and preventive intervention. The campaign in Kesikudar aimed to break the stigma around substance use by opening channels of communication and cultural storytelling.
Studies show that awareness campaigns reduce the risk of addiction in teens by nearly 45%.
Structure of the Awareness Program
The event was thoughtfully divided into two powerful segments. The first was a direct awareness session that included interactions with villagers, sharing statistics, and real-life testimonials. This was followed by a gripping Nukkad Natak, or street play, performed by the Drama Club volunteers, which visually depicted the downfall of an addicted individual and the cascading effects on family and community.
To ensure the session was effective and inclusive, the awareness program was thoughtfully structured into three progressive components. It began with an interactive briefing, where facilitators used relatable language and simple visuals to explain the types and consequences of substance abuse. This was followed by a question-and-answer segment, allowing villagers to clarify doubts and share personal observations, encouraging community dialogue. Finally, informative pamphlets in the local language were distributed, reinforcing the key messages delivered during the session and ensuring the takeaways extended beyond the event.
A Campaign Through Theatre: The Power of Street Plays
The nashamukt street play had a profound emotional impact. Portraying relatable village life scenarios, it depicted how addiction, often beginning as peer pressure, transforms into a cycle of destruction. The villagers, many of whom had witnessed such stories firsthand, were deeply moved. The visual and dramatic format conveyed the message more effectively than plain discourse ever could.
“The play made me see what I went through, and what my brother is still going through. I hope he watches something like this someday.” โ Local villager
Leadership Backing the NASHAMUKT Mission
The program concluded with a heartfelt address from the Mukhiya of the Gram Panchayat, who not only appreciated the student initiative but also pledged village support in advancing a nashamukt mission. His words added weight to the cause and opened avenues for deeper engagement at the Panchayat level.
“Addiction is not a private issue anymore. It affects our youth, our workforce, and our peace. We need to stand united.”
The response from local leadership did not end with applause. Encouraged by the eventโs success, the Gram Panchayat has initiated discussions to convert this moment into a long-term mission for a nashamukt community.
One of the key proposals is to hold monthly awareness sessions in the village commons, where community members can come together, share their experiences, and support each other in their journey away from addiction.
Local schools have also shown interest in joining the initiative. Teachers plan to include short classroom discussions and essay writing competitions around addiction awareness to involve children in the dialogue early on.
In addition, plans are underway to create a village-level monitoring group consisting of elders, Anganwadi workers, teachers, and young volunteers. This group would serve as both support and surveillance โ identifying those at risk, offering timely help, and making sure that no individual fights the battle alone.

The vision is clear: transform this initiative into a sustainable framework for health and harmony, driven by the people, for the people. With continued collaboration between students, local governance, and villagers, the hope is to create a deeply rooted, lasting change.
A Step Towards Cultural Restoration and Social Harmony
Beyond the immediate message of substance abuse prevention, the awareness event also rekindled a sense of cultural identity within the village. The dramatic format of the nashamukt street play resonated with traditional storytelling forms, allowing the message to be both familiar and impactful.
Addiction often disrupts not just individuals, but the very rhythm of rural life. As families lose earners and social relationships get strained, communities become fractured in subtle ways. Rebuilding awareness around this issue contributes to restoring lost balance and shared understandingโone that once defined harmonious rural living.
Building a nashamukt community also means nurturing emotional bonds, reviving cultural pride, and reaffirming the values that once held village life together.
Events like these, grounded in empathy and collective reflection, help create space for conversations that go beyond addiction itself. They become opportunities to rebuild trust, foster empathy, and gradually restore the invisible threads of connection within the community.

Villagers have shown a strong willingness to remain engaged in the conversationโnot just during events, but in their daily lives through active vigilance and mutual support.
It is anticipated that in the coming months, motivated youth will continue championing the nashamukt cause through peer education sessions, informal gatherings, and regular community check-ins. The local administration also aims to integrate anti-addiction dialogue into schools and Gram Sabha discussions, further reinforcing the message at every level.

๐น Catalyst โ Sustaining the Nashamukt Impact
The Nashamukt project has been structured for long-term sustainability. It has been officially integrated with the Volunteers Service Organisation (VSO) of the college, which has embraced the core ideology and will continue the efforts in the coming months. Furthermore, the project has encouraged active collaboration with other student bodiesโsuch as the drama clubโwhose members are now engaged in upcoming initiatives like street plays (nukkad natak) to promote awareness. As the coordinator of the project, similar campaigns are being planned over the next two to three months to ensure that the message of a drug-free society continues to reach wider communities.
Working Towards a Sustainable NASHAMUKT Future
The eventโs success laid the foundation for sustained efforts toward a nashamukt society. Plans are underway for bi-monthly awareness meets, support group formations, and inclusion of addiction-related education in local schools. The villageโs enthusiastic participation was a testimony to the power of collective action and student-led community outreach.
A nashamukt community is healthier, safer, and more economically stable.
Conclusion: Every Step Countsย
With meaningful initiatives like the one in Kesikudar, the goal of a nashamukt India doesn’t feel far-fetched. The enthusiasm of the villagers, the creativity of the students, and the backing of local leadership together painted a hopeful picture. When awareness meets action, transformation is inevitable.
This event was not just a performance or a discussionโit was a movement. A strong message was sent out that addiction is not a private burden but a collective social issue. From emotional storytelling to rational awareness, every aspect of the campaign worked together to nudge hearts and change perspectives.
Going forward, the objective is to sustain this momentum. Plans for future awareness drives, school interventions, youth mentorship programs, and family counseling are already being explored. The dream of addiction-free villages can be realised, one act of awareness at a time.
More importantly, this initiative has sparked conversations within the villageโconversations that had long remained unspoken. Families are beginning to acknowledge the issue, local teachers are expressing interest in preventive education, and youths are coming forward to be part of change-making efforts. These small shifts, though subtle, are signs of lasting impact.
The mission is not about one-time campaigns; itโs about igniting a shift in mindset. It requires consistent effort, empathy, and collaboration between communities, students, and local governance. With villages like Kesikudar leading by example, the ripple effect can extend to neighbouring areas, gradually building a healthier and more responsible rural landscape.
Above all, this initiative reminded everyone that change is possibleโand it begins with awareness, empathy, and unity. Each voice raised against addiction is a step toward healing. Each street play, each discussion, each commitment counts.
